DICK TRACY
Sondheim was not initially involved in Warren Beatty's film, Dick Tracy. However, after hearing the song his co-star Madonna wrote "Back in Business Baby" Beatty hired Sondheim to score the movie. He went on to rewrite that song, and write an additional 4 other songs for the film. His song, Sooner or Later, went on to win him his only Academy Award.
FOLLIES
The other show in this section, Follies (with a book by James Goldman), follows 2 couples through a Ziegfeld-era style reunion in a crumbling theater set to be demolished. The women, back on stage for the first time in decades, must face the reality that the Follies literally and metaphorically are over, but they can't help closing their eyes, thinking about the past and thinking - good times, and bum times I've seen 'em all...and I'm here.
