Sweeney Todd
"I happen to like movies and plays about dislikable people as long as I get to know why they are what they are" Sondheim said about the next show we will feature in this section. In 1980 Sondheim partnered with book writer Hugh Wheeler to adapt Christopher Bond's play Sweeney Todd. Sweeney marked a departure from the traditional musical and took a more operatic approach, underscoring the vast majority of the show, while only leaving select moments in silence. The approach changed the face of musical theater, and has become a more common practice. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is based on a series of penny dreadfuls. Tale has that Jack The Ripper, may have been a copy cat of the original Sweeny, however, far less menacing. Now, we invite you to attend the tale of Sweeney Todd.
